The project seeks to estimate the major private and community forest cover and quality in the Nyangores catchment. This is expected to help identify areas of intervention as well as inform planning and management decisions. These forest resources, whether natural or man-made shall be mapped. The areas of extreme deforestation such as near farms, livestock grazing areas and agricultural intrusions shall also be estimated to enable proper quantification of forest cover in the catchment. This outcome will be captured in Digital Elevation Models, Maps as well as charts. This is expected to help in decision making, monitoring activities and catchment management activities as well as contribute information for educational material. Over 1000 educational material for conservation education and awareness campaigns shall be produced during the course of the project.

Principally, the project team intends to capture indigenous knowledge in educational materials even as it seeks to map out the forest resources for localised intervention efforts. This knowledge, especially on tree and other plant and crop species shall be implemented during the establishment of indigenous tree nurseries which is to pioneer river-bank woodlot establishment and rehabilitation. 200 community members will be trained. This is expected to enhance participation in natural resource management and conservation forums at grassroots level. The 12 members of the Nyangores WRUA team shall also benefit from the training and increase their knowledge on feasible watershed management and recharge components. This will enable them contribute meaningfully, to sustainable use and management of the forest and water resources as well as augment the action points of the Nyangores sub-catchment Management Plan, 2011.

Finally, the project expects to establish a preliminary data-base with pertinent forest resource information for future interventions, planning and management options critical for the sustainability of the sub-catchment and the Upper Mara Basin. This project therefore shall serve as the beginning of a concerted effort to rejuvenate the catchment waters and is to be emulated by other catchments elsewhere.
