The Brahmaputra Valley of Assam of north east India is one of the major habitats of endangered Gangetic dolphin in the world. A recent investigation confirmed the existence of 238 dolphins in the entire region and various anthropogenic activities, viz., by-catch, poaching, sand mining etc. as their main threats.

To reduce these pressures it is very important that the State Forest Department, State Fishery Department, local conservationists and local communities of Assam actively participate in dolphin conservation. In this project, efforts will be made to involve all of these stakeholders in dolphin conservation through organizing a few workshops and awareness camps in different parts of Assam.
