The development of an urban wetland conservation program is built on an outdoor nature education program in Muara Angke. The project will create awareness for urban wetland conservation among a wide range of stakeholders. Through engaging schools, universities, neighbourhoods, city administration, corporate groups and the general public, the project will facilitate the development of a local conservation constituency.

By relying mainly on a network of volunteer educator supported by 3 facilitators, the project will enlist local ownership and ensure project sustainability. JGM has so far received more than 1000 requests to join as green volunteers to become urban environmental educators, which demonstrates the strong desire of Jakarta’s residents to improve the environmental conditions in of Asia’s most polluted city.

The project will continue to support waste separation, recycling and composting in neighbouring slums and we will conduct monthly monitoring of birds in Muara Angke, as well as conduct regular investigation of local bird markets for protected bird species to facilitate enforcement through the local nature conservation department.
