The project aims to assess the status of marine turtle populations in southwest Madagascar and to promote and develop community marine turtle conservation.
There are currently no conservation strategies in place to manage the traditional turtle fishery in Madagascar. A year of monitoring in the Andavadoaka region of southwest Madagascar indicated that the fishery is highly active. As a result of awareness-raising work the first two known green turtle nests successfully hatched in the region and turtle conservation has been introduced into the local marine protected area.
This projects aims to build on previous achievements through the development of a complete community marine turtle conservation management plan for the region.
