National Park Kerinci Seblat(NPKS) is located in Sumatera island. It is one of the biggest of nature conservation in Indonesia and Southeast Asia. It has a lot of kinds of ecosystem tropical rain forest. Both hill and mountain range are very important as water resource of 9.940.000 ha of big and small current rivers in this area. Because of that it makes NPKS is very important as wider part of “life support system "out of this area.

In NPKS area there are more than 4.000 kinds of plants, 37 kind of mammalians, 8 kind of primates, 10 kind of reptiles, 6 kind of amphibians, 139 kind of birds lot of kind of scarce fauna, Sumatera rhinoceros.

According to the last data, 40.000 ha NPKS area were damaged. It raises the questions of “Why” and “What did happen”. In especially, it can be summarized, damages are going on at NPKS area caused by some of authority men in this case central government via NPKS center and local government were not seriously in protecting this area. NPKS area is made as selling issue by both central government and local government to get project fund, the result was not clear and it can not touch to people who lived at surrounding NPKS area.

For defending conservation at NPKS area, we must investigate further in situation, condition, and people at surrounding NPKS area. So that, with support from the Rufford Small Grants for Nature Conservation we make program protection NPKS area, by approaching culture. The first step of this program is seminar and dialog. It was held on 25 July 2004 to produce a social control from Kerinci people. It will become law foundation in supporting conservation and protecting NPKS area with its various biological and it will become law foundation to make protection program in this area for the future. For following up actions, we will conduct research at field after getting authentic information and data that were given by represented people in seminar and dialog.
