The Striped Nerite (Theodoxus transversalis C. Pfeiffer, 1828) is a small freshwater snail endemic to the Danube River basin. Typically inhabiting river bottoms with solid substrates, this species thrives in habitats characterized by relatively high dissolved oxygen levels and slow water flow velocities along the middle and lower Danube and its tributaries. However, anthropogenic impacts, alterations in river hydrology, pollution, and the invasion of Theodoxus fluviatilis (Linnaeus 1758) have significantly diminished its preferred habitats. Once widespread, the Striped Nerite is now classified as endangered by the IUCN, with remnant populations mainly confined to smaller tributaries with adequate water quality. Its dwindling numbers have led to its inclusion in Appendices II and IV of the European Habitats Directive and Resolution No. 6 (1998) of the Bern Convention, which highlight species requiring special conservation efforts.

In Serbia, populations of striped nerite are small, fragmented and isolated, with a few main refugia under strong anthropogenic pressure. However, comprehensive information on the species' distribution, population size, and conservation status in the region remains insufficient. Therefore, our project aims to address this knowledge gap and contribute to the conservation of this species. Our aim is to assess the current distribution and ecology of the species in order to provide a framework for its more effective conservation and protection. Objectives of this project are multifaceted. Firstly, we seek to map the current distribution of Striped Nerite populations in Serbia and assess their ecological and biological status. Concurrently, we aim to evaluate the ecological condition of their habitats and identify predominant threats. By comparing our findings with existing literature, we endeavor to enhance our understanding of the species' status and inform conservation efforts accordingly. Crucially, our project extends beyond scientific research. We are committed to raising public awareness about the plight of the Striped Nerite and the importance of conserving its habitats. Through educational lectures, workshops, and online outreach initiatives, we aim to engage with local and regional communities, fostering a sense of stewardship and collective responsibility for biodiversity conservation.
