Aim:

1) more detailed studying of biology, ecology and phytosociology of our endangered endemic species Betula klokovii using different and techniques and approaches

2) determination and improving the most optimal conditions of this species conservation and renovation.

3) define more exactly its taxonomical status and establish the degree of separateness from another birch species

Betula klokovii Zaverucha is a vulnerable strict endemic species of birches. This species was described from west-north of Podillya by B. Zaverucha in 1964, so these places are locus classicus. The area of its distribution is limited by two separate localities in the world - Strakhova and Maslyatyn mountains, near Kremenets in Ternopil region, Ukraine. These places are locus classicus for this species. Main dangers for the populations of B.klokovii now are habitat changing by nearly located chalk quarries and intensive hybridization with another species. At the present time with the aim to save biodiversity on this territory National Nature Park “The Kremenets Mountains” has been already created, but number of Betula klokovii population still very low and sometimes tend to decrease. So, to save this species we need to create an effective strategy of this species conservation and renovation.

One of the main problems of Betula klokovii is the fact that its biology, ecology, phylogeny and genesis of this species still not clear yet. Therefore we are interested in the study of features of this species with the aim of enhancing its protection and renovation conditions and clarifying its phylogeny. We expect that knowledge, obtained in releasing of such project will be very useful for conservation and renovation another hybridogenous species and makes more easier the precise delineation of such taxa and its phylogeny reconstruction.

By the releasing this project intend to receive following:

- complex studying of B. klokovii nature populations;

- to detect the role and importance of B. klokovii in the local phytocoenoses;

- to develop reasonable strategy for conservation of this species in already created NNP “Kremenets mountains”;

- to detect the degree of hybridization between B. klokovii and B. pendula and to find activities for decreasing or prevention of this process;

- try to increase B. klokovii population by planting this species of seeds and grafting;

- to find the ways to precise delineation of birch species and their hybrids by applying morphological, ecological, anatomical, karyological, molecular-genetic and other methods;

- to provide activities for popularization of knowledge about this birch among local people (particularly, preparing of booklets containing the information about this species).
