The aim is to research the distribution, ecology and conservation status of 23 species of bats dwelling in Ararat valley, will be base for future conservation works serving biodiversity of bats in Armenia.
Among the threatened biodiversity of Armenia are 27 species of bats. 23 species of Armenian bats are distributed in Ararat valley. 3 species listed in IUCN Red List as a Near Threatened species, 1 species (Rhinolophus mehely) listed as a vulnerable and 1 species (Myotis schaubi (araxenus)) listed as a data deficient. Several of bat species dwelling in Ararat valley are very difficult to identify in the field (cryptic species) and therefore poorly studied, their conservation aspects are largely unknown. To assess the distributions and conservation needs of the bat species, reliable identification characters based on genetically identified specimen and a variety of locally adapted field techniques are urgently needed.
According to my intensive field works in Armenia have been revealed that populations of bats in Ararat Valley are more vulnerable, because of this area has undergone major anthropogenic transformation, resulting in the degradation of the natural environment. The endemic value of the arid ecosystem of Ararat Valley and its importance for conservation cannot be overstated. Agriculture is the main threat for the ecosystems here. More than 90% lands here have been privatized and much of them are ploughed.
We will create of database of distribution and conservation status of bats dwelling Ararat-valley. Collected data will serve baseline information for future projects and Environmental Management programs in hotspots. Based on morphological and DNA analysis data, it will be possible to understand systematic status of bats dwelling in Ararat- valley. We will also create the maps of current distribution with outlining the exact locations of habitat.
Being the lecturer and researcher of Yerevan State University I will involve students in conservation activities and provide an opportunity for them to get practical knowledge, skills and experience in field research and conservation of the rare species. Beside of this we will organize small workshops for local people for explaining importance of bats in ecosystem and for them specially.
