Integrated Coastal Management in Pusong Cium Island for Habitat of Tuntong Laut (Batagur borneoensis)
Sustainability of integrated coastal management by Involving all relevant stakeholder is the key solution for conserving the Tuntong Laut (Batagur borneoensis) and their habitats.
Coastal areas of the Pusong Cium island are dominated by mangrove vegetation. The recent conversion of mangrove forest habitat into oil palm plantations has caused a decline of the critically endangered species of Tuntong Laut(Batagur borneoensis). Sustainability of integrated management by involving all relevant stakeholders is a key solution conserving species and their habitats. General scope of work of this program are:
Goal 1. Assessment of conservation status of Tuntong Laut and their habitats.
Activity: Species survey
Methodology:
Counting population. The collection of data using descriptive method with type of field survey and observation the number of species that went ashore to lay their eggs at night during only in the peak spawning season/rain season (October - January) and the observation of the number of eggs produced.
Observation of behavior, spawning activity and location, predators and human activities related to the species based on field survey.
Activity: Habitat survey
Methodology:
Observation of human activities that utilize habitat for the livelihood activities and its impacts for the species and benefit the protection habitat for the local community.
Record terrestrial and aquatic fauna.
Goal 2. Assessment the use of Tuntong Laut body parts for local trade and their habitat
Activity: Survey the use of Tuntong Laut body parts
Methodology:
Record number of Tuntong Laut and eggs taken in each season (November-February).
Observation the illegal trade of the species, body part use, market and price by field survey and soft interview.
Register parties involved in trading activities and calculate the percentage of people's income.
Activity : Survey of the habitat use.
Methodology:
Assessing the benefits of the mangrove ecosystem for the local community.
Goal 3. Conservation action
Activity: Capacity building
Methodology:
Conservation campaign to protect species and give information about benefits of mangrove habitat for the local community.
Activity : Integrated Management
Methodology:
Formation of Management Board endorsed by the Aceh Government.
Making an integrated work plan.
Activity : Protection of habitat and species
Methodology:
Publication the habitat and Tuntong Laut as a protected species.
Propose Tuntong Laut as a protection species in the conservation regulation of Aceh.
Creating a conservation and protected breeding area.
