Cervus duvauceli is protected deer in Nepal according to National Park and Wildlife Conservation Act 1973. The Terai, ultimate home of swamp deer during 20th century, runs parallel to the Indo-Nepal border and its decline in status has been proportionate with advance of human’s colonization, which devastatingly accelerated after Second World War.

The only population of swamp deer left in Shuklaphanta Wildlife Reserve is under a serious threat of declining due to plunder activities by people of Tatargunj area (India) and Beldandi area (Nepal) since many years back. Therefore, this project is designed to create awareness, among these groups from both Nepalese and Indian communities, about importance of swamp deer conservation for their living as well the promotion and strengthening of anti-poaching activities. Therefore, this project is based on following objectives:

1. Creating awareness among obliterating groups in both Nepalese and Indian communities about importance of swamp deer conservation for their living;

2. Promotion and strengthening of anti-poaching activities in the target area.

Various programs like conservation education, promotion of anti-poaching activities, extension program and youth empowerment program will be conducted which in sequence will help to make strong eco-chain and try to formulate different ways so as to live in the least destructive way. The project will be the foundation to change attitude of the people towards swamp deer and motivate them for conservation of such endangered species. The overall objective of this project will aid in protecting and maintaining existing biological diversity and ecosystem with specific focus to this species and will also assist in maintaining ecological integrity through the species conservation.
