Community Stewardship in Conservation and Sustainable Management of Mangroves in Orissa Coast I
Community Stewardship in Conservation and Sustainable Management of Mangroves in Orissa Coast II
Community Stewardship in Conservation and Sustainable Management of Mangroves in Odisha Coast IV
The prime objective is to organise community led mangrove plantation, generate awareness among the community on mangroves, and promote alternative livelihoods of mangrove forest dependant families.
Realising the importance of mangrove ecosystem for coastal stabilization, protect communities from cyclones, tsunami & storm, maintaining critical habitats for many common, threatened and endangered species, fish production, generating economic opportunities and providing community with food security for subsistence and survival, thus effective measures would have a major environmental, economic and social impact in the new project villages.
The focus of the project is on empowering local communities to sustainable management of the mangrove in partnership with other stakeholders and making all accountable for the quality of the resulting stewardship. Specific village level institution such as Village Mangrove Council (VMC) will be formed and strengthened. We have been good experience of facilitating on formation of VMC. This well-considered model directly engages local community on mangrove conservation and restoration and has proven extremely successful. The same time mangrove restoration work will ensure the well being of the local ecosystem and the local communities in project areas. More importantly, it will promote ‘ecological–hydrological’ restoration method, which is not only an economic but also efficient approach to restore mangrove forest. The interventions will lead to massive reduction of mangrove over-use and create new mangrove forest of 12 ha. conservation of mangrove forest, improve the alternative livelihood of mangrove dependant families and minimize the dependency on mangrove forest and create awareness among community members and stakeholders of their critical importance for mankind in 10 villages.
This project will also train local community volunteers and village mangrove council members on how to restore and conserve the mangrove resources in a sustainable manner. We plan to develop expertise amongst key personnel from community as mangrove ambassadors, so that they can extend the knowledge to others within their community.
