The purpose of this project is to develop a series of humane, non-lethal, techniques to reduce farmer-primate conflict at the farm-forest interface, and improve animal welfare through encouraging use of humane, non-lethal mitigation techniques instead of wire snares, poison bait and man traps, that are commonly used presently. More specifically we will:

(i) Evaluate the effectiveness of traditional crop protection strategies already in use locally.

(ii) Identify areas where crop protection can be enhanced, e.g. farmers’ ability to detect primates on their farms, and/or deterrence techniques used.

(iii) Develop and field test humane, non-lethal, tools with farmers to reduce crop damage by primates.

(iv) Run workshops with local farmers to demonstrate new or improved crop protection techniques.
