Secondly, much has been talked, done and written on Medicinal Plants, but hardly for Medicinal Wildlife, at least in this part of Africa; until we projected it in the Phase One. Unlike medicinal plants, which when harvested the plant/tree is left standing; Medicinal Wildlife harvested leaves an animal dead!

This project phase aims to continue to project and prevent the threat to indigenous wildlife species by the unsustainable use for traditional medicine; to instil greater mentality change and inspire actions for their sustainable use/management.

Long Term Goal:

The education and awareness campaigns, support to local hunters to provide legal access to medicinal wildlife and training of tradi-practitioners on sustainable use of species, are steps to consolidate achievements in the pilot area at this pilot stage.

These steps shall be replicated in future in the wider Central African Sub-Region, with the long term aim of instigating not only positive mentality change, conservation actions and research initiatives in this line, but also policy or legislation changes nationally and inter-nationality, for the concerted promotion of sustainable use/management of the concerned species.

These will match conservation actions already undertaken in East and Southern Africa and China.

Planned Activities:

a) Procurement equipment/materials.

b) Run a “MEDICINAL WILDLIFE QUARTER-HOUR” on radio bi-monthly.

c) Trip to present symposium recommendations, poster, etc. to Minister and international NGOs and some radio/TV presentations on our work.

d) Produce a short film on sustainable medicinal wildlife, with scenes on wildlife sensitization;

e) Reproduce more posters, for further awareness.

f) Subsidize (by 75%) the acquisition of hunting licenses by local people;

g) Organize training seminar for tradi-practitioners as trainers on sustainable wildlife use.

h) To join commemoration of African Traditional Medicine Day with information gazettes.

i) Monitoring/evaluation (M&E;) of the two phases of the project.
