The specific objectives of the research are: 1) conduct a population survey of the Javan gibbon at the Gunung Halimun National Park to provide updated information on the status of the population; 2) conduct a vegetation survey (plot sampling) at the Gunung Halimun to assess habitat quality and provide dietary information about Javan gibbon at the park; 3) conduct GIS analysis of the Gunung Halimun National Park to establish a current estimates of available habitat, and predict the rate and extend of future habitat loss.

The population survey and habitat analysis at Gunung Halimun National Park will play important role in providing critical baseline data on the current status of the endangered Javan gibbon at Gunung Halimun as well as for the overall population status of Javan gibbon in Java. This study will also make an important contribution to the conservation management of the Javan gibbon by offering recommendations on the following:

1) appropriate habitat management based on ideal habitat characteristics, behaviour and ranging patterns;

2) effective control measures to help reduce and eliminate hunting pressure and illegal logging and promote community awareness and involvement;

3) an on-going population monitoring program, involving Park staff, to provide annual estimates of the current population status.

Without increased efforts to established a permanent program of population monitoring and habitat assessment at Gunung Halimun, as well as at other Javan gibbon sites, this species will continue to decrease and ultimately disappear in the wild.
