23 Jan 2012 Maio Island, Cabo Verde, Africa
This project is essentially to enlarge the protect area; implement management plan in the Salina Porto Ingles and also public dissemination to promote a better process of conservation in this area.
Salina Porto Ingles was recently proposed for Ramsar designation to acknowledge its outstanding conservation values, and a Management Plan has been developed for the Salina. However, the Cape Verdean authority (Directorate for Ambient Environment, DGA) does not have personnel or finances to execute the Management Plan.
The DGA is willing to transfer the management role to a locally-based NGO, Maio Biodiversity Foundation. Then the idea to stablish conservation in the Salina, because Maio – similarly to many tropical islands – is facing development and increased tourism, which can adversely affect local biodiversity.
This project will be developed this year, with numerous activities since implementation of management measures such as sensitization and environmental education with children and adolescents from schools and local communities, also with the national competent authorities.
