16 Nov 2009 Thousand Islands National Park, Indonesia, Asia Birds
The key aim of this project is to save the Brahminy kite, the proud symbol of Jakarta, and its habitat by rescue and re-introduction and activities to raise educational awareness.
Indonesia has a big problem with illegal animal trade. The monitoring of the wildlife trade as done by JAAN leads to confiscations of protected wildlife. One of the species often confiscated, are the Brahminy kites. JAAN has started to work towards the conservation of the Brahminy kite amongst other raptors in Indonesia through direct rescue, rehabilitation and release and educational activities.
The educational activities in the area of the Thousand Islands National Park contribute towards better protection of this beautiful marine park. In the area, we can still find hawks bill turtles, green turtles, two species of dolphins, many different bird species and now, due to the rehabilitation program set up by JAAN, also the Brahminy kite. JAAN’s goal of the programme is to protect all natural resources in the area, including the reef (as this is vital for the survival of the Brahminy kite too) and therefore the program in general contributes towards protection of many endangered animal species, just off the coast of Indonesia’s capital. The Brahminy kite serve as ambassadors, why its important to guard the Marine Park as a whole.
1. Educational Leaflets and Billboards printing;
2. School visits in the whole southern area (all habited islands) of the National Park to provide presentations about nature conservation. Billboards will be placed on every island with information about Fauna in the area and their protected status;
3. Ongoing monitoring of the illegal wildlife trade (Jakarta), on a weekly basis; monitoring is needed to provide information about wildlife traded and plan confiscations;
4. Confiscation of Brahminy kites / Raptors from the illegal trade circuit (ongoing); confiscations are needed to prosecute wildlife traders and rescue wildlife from the illegal trade circuit
