Pangolin Population Status in the Forest versus Savannah Habitat in the Mpem et Djim National Park, Cameroon
Pangolin Population Assessment in Forest Vs. Savannah Habitats: Improving the Effectiveness of Camera-Traps Used to Monitor These Species
White-bellied pangolins are notoriously difficult to detect, making traditional survey methods insufficient for accurately assessing their populations and guiding conservation efforts. Our project seeks to address these challenges by evaluating innovative camera trapping techniques, specifically comparing arboreal and log-based deployments to improve pangolin detection and distribution data in Cameroon. By refining these methods, we aim to develop more effective conservation strategies tailored to the species' unique behaviours and habitats.
In parallel, we are committed to enhancing community involvement in pangolin conservation by mobilizing efforts against poaching and promoting sustainable alternatives, such as domestic animal rearing, to reduce reliance on wildmeat. Through these collaborative efforts, we aim to protect the white-bellied pangolin and its habitat, ensuring the species' survival for future generations.
