16 May 2004 Orinoquia, Colombia, Central and Latin America Mammals | Marine
This project aims to conserving aquatic ecosystems from the stand point of protecting the giant river otter of Colombia.
This project will develop an integrated strategy for monitoring and conserving aquatic ecosystems based on research and education, using the giant river otter as a flagship species. In addition to surveying the local population, four monitoring visits will be carried out of two populations of giant river otter distributed in the Amazonia and the Orinoquia.
These monitoring visits will provide data on the trends of current populations as compared with data from previous monitoring visits. The resulting information will be linked to environmental education activities and ex situ research on the species being implemented in the programmes for conservation of endangered species of the Zoological Foundation of Cali (CREA).
