Population Assessment and Conservation Needs of the Lui Tiger Gecko (Goniurosaurus luii) in Vietnam

Against the background of increasing anthropogenic pressure, two Vietnamese tiger geckos (namely Goniurosaurus lichtenfelderi and Goniurosaurus luii) have been listed in the IUCN Red List as “Vulnerable” as well as CITES Appendix II and the Vietnamese Governmental Decree.

Recent biological research indeed showed that their low population size, habitat specialization and threats of over-exploitation for pet trade and forest destruction can drive them into the global extinction vortex. Therefore, conservation activities should be implemented to protect the two species. This project aims to conduct conservation measures for both species through capacity strengthening for local rangers and community awareness raising.
