The deforestation crisis in Indonesia has reached epidemic proportions. Protected areas are increasingly being targeted and much of the countries lowland forest could be annihilated by 2010.  In some areas, tree spiking could represent the last line of defence against illegal logging. This project will investigate a tree spiking project in the Sungai Wain Protection Forest, East Kalimantan to assess whether the technique constitutes part of an effective response to illegal logging, and whether it may be transferred to other protected areas.
