Anoa are endangered species of small buffalo endemic to Sulawesi, Indonesia. They are the largest mammals on the island and are principally under threat from habitat destruction, hunting and possibly disease. They have retreated into the interior of the island during the past century, and are now found only in certain undisturbed forest areas.

The project's aim is to investigate the geographical distribution and habitat preferences of Anoa, using GIS and other methods, to identify those areas of highest conservation value. The ultimate objective is to provide sufficient information for the management and conservation of wild Anoa stocks and to establish captive breeding programmes. The team will be collaborating with local and international NGOs and universities to ensure that information is distributed widely and that as many communities as possible are involved.
