Pampas cat and Geoffroy’s cat live together in large areas of Southern South America and have similar conservation threats, that is, habitat loss and poaching. The ecology of these species is poorly understood and the interactions between them has never been studied. Both were heavily hunted for the international fur trade until the mid 1980s. At present, these species are protected in Argentina however some illegal trade still exists.

Information on these species is scant but is critically needed for their long term conservation. The objective of this study will be to capture and radio collar these species at Lihué Calel National Park to learn about their home range sizes, habitat use and daily activity patterns. For Pampas cat, this will be the first study gathering comprehensive data through the use of radio telemetry. The information gathered will provide critical information necessary to develop effective conservation and management strategies for both animals.
