CWMC reunion.

The main objective of this is to allow the local communities to evaluate the risks of uncontrolled hunting to damage the potentials of present fauna as protein resources

A study visit to Mokoko took place in August 2004. In this area, the Mount Cameroon Project has successfully conducted an example of community wildlife management. The members of the CWMC visited the members of community wildlife management committee (CWMC) of Mokoko to exchange information and experiences. Based on this experience and available data on their forest, PGS will help the CWMC to develop a management plan for controlled hunting in the forests of Mimpala, Doumo-pierre and Malen v.

The CWMC is working in close collaboration with the local administrator in charge of forest (MINEF) for sensitisation on the prescription of the Cameroonian law on village hunting, inspection and in defining a system to control poaching activities by immigrant hunters.

Upon invitation, PGS presented the project and its results to the neighbouring villages Eschou and Madjuh 1. These villages expressed their interest during the first phase to participate in the overall program for controlled hunting linked to development of the communities. We can summarize the attitude of neighbouring villages in this quote by the chief of Madjuh 1 ‘If I see someone writing on his front head or on his back head the word DEVELOPMENT I will follow him without hesitating’. This means that if he is asked to do conservation for the purpose of development he will do it.

CWMC plans to present the results of both local surveys and the study tour at Mokoko to these villages.
