Conserving Critically Endangered Vultures in Nigeria: A Study on Vegetation Structure, Tree Species, and Community Engagement in the Hadejia Nguru Wetland Complex
The project is born out of the observed need to reach rural communities surrounding the Hadejia-Nguru wetlands in Yobe state, North-eastern Nigeria.
This wetlands complex serves as stopover sites and wintering sites for Palaearctic and Intra African migrants. It harbours a number of endangered and near-threatened bird species. The biodiversity and habitats are increasingly at risk due to the increase in human population and their ignorance. The communities surrounding the wetlands depend solely on the wetlands for fishing, firewood collection, irrigation farming and hunting which have led to habitat destruction.
