Breeding Biology of the Black-Bodied Woodpecker and Bare-Faced Curassow: Two Large Forest Indicator Species of the Gran Chaco, Argentina

Juan Manuel Fernandez

This project aims to obtain novel and valuable information on two species with declining populations in the Gran Chaco: the Black-bodied Woodpecker (Hylatomus [Dryocopus] schulzii) and the Bare-faced Curassow (Crax fasciolata). We will study their reproductive biology in relation to temporal and structural variables.

For the Black-bodied Woodpecker, we will also evaluate the potential negative effects of hybridization with the common Dryocopus lineatus. Given that the Bare-faced Curassow is considered an important disperser, we will analyze its diet through fecal material analysis. Our goal is to identify crucial forest structural elements, to propose effective conservation strategies for their preservation.
