Cheer Pheasant patchily distributed with isolated population toward west to Kaligandaki River in1800-3050 m ASL in Nepal. Hunting, livestock grazing, changing land-use patterns and level of knowledge of local people on this bird are the main threats. Consequently, it is listed as listed as Vulnerable in IUCN Red List of Threatened Species and State of Nepal’s birds. It is listed in appendix I in CITES and protected bird of Nepal. Due to its distribution in remote areas and capacity of people to monitor the species, consistent information are not available on its distribution, population status and ecological needs which are hindering the conservation management plan of this species in Nepal.

This project will address the recommendation measures by Birdlife International and Bird Conservation Nepal’s State of Nepal’s Birds 2010 will assess the current status of Cheer Pheasant in and around the Rara National Park in the mid-west Nepal in order to fill gap in authentic information on population status, distribution, density and habitat requirement. Further this project will change the attitude of local people enhancing the knowledge on Cheer Pheasant among local communities, stakeholders and school students and will encourage people to be more sensitive toward the Cheer Pheasant with developed capacity of local people and park staffs to monitor the species regularly to safeguard its future in Nepal. Call count, direct observation method and communities outreach will be adopted to meet the aims.
