This project aims to set up community seed banks in several villages of the Kanchipuram district of Tamil Nadu. These community seed banks will conserve the indigenous genetic resources of paddy and vegetables and also provide for a seed exchange system which is farmer oriented. In-situ conservation centres would be set up in villages for demonstrations and preservation. The evaluation and characterisation of these varieties will be done involving the farming community Farmers will be encouraged to grow these indigenous varieties organically.
One of the aims of this project is also to create awareness in the community focusing on village schools in the area. The school students will be involved in conducting biodiversity surveys and in biodiversity conservation. Farmers who conserve indigenous varieties will be linked with the consumers so that farmers get a decent return for their produce and consumers have diverse, safe, food.
