Promoting Ecotourism for the Conservation of Biodiversity and the Family Economy Strengthening: Agricultural Trails and Demonstration Plots in Cotui

Strengthen the rural tourism attractive in the area that support the biodiversity conservation and the diversification of the livelihoods of the producers.

Ecotourism is an important area that has been developed by Enda Dominicana (partner organization of the project) in rural areas of Colinas Bajas Model Forest. With this proposal enabling agricultural tourist trails are planned and in turn, develop two demonstration plots: one organic shade coffee and other organic pineapple crop association.

It seeks to further strengthen the offer of trails in the area, so this would be part of the ecotourism proposal Colinas Bajas Model Forest development of two new paths: the path of pineapple and the path of coffee in the communities of La Cabirma and Hernando Alonzo respectively. Besides in these paths demonstration plots to expose technologies and processes that apart from being exploited by tourists, other producers in the area can learn from these techniques so they can also be carried out on their land.

Agricultural activity is the most important source of income in the communities of La Cabirma and Hernando Alonzo. La Cabirma has an important pineapple production, contributing to the Sánchez Ramírez province cake supply of this product. Note that in this province each year is done successfully Pineapple Fair.

Knowing the routes of pineapple and coffee, visitors support the growth of an initiative that takes conservation of agricultural biodiversity through agroforestry systems. In the coffee route, apart from knowing the whole process for making coffee shade and craft, visitors can take a walk up to a coffee farm located on top of the hill El Diviso of 562 meters above sea level. On the way and at the farm are species associated with the production of shade coffee.

Besides in these paths demonstration plots it will be expose technologies and processes that apart from being observe by tourists, other producers in the area can learn from these techniques so they can also be carried out.
