Formulation and Implementation of an Awareness Campaign and Conservation Strategy Plan for Nycticebus in Indonesia: Mitigation of the Main Threats to their Survival II
The aim of the project is to increase the awareness and the protection of slow lorises (Nycticebus) in Indonesia through media and campaigning and law enforcement efforts.
Nycticebus javanicus is listed in the Red List of the 25 most endangered world primates, categorized as Endangered by IUCN and listed Appendix I of CITES, and protected under Indonesian Law. Yet wild loris populations are declining rapidly through habitat loss and illegal pet trade. The project aims to mitigate the trade in slow lorises through investigations that support law enforcement programmes. Involvement of local authorities and other stakeholders will be essential in the execution of this project and in developing guidelines for the confiscation, rescue, rehabilitation and release of lorises. Education and awareness through media and graphic materials will also be carried out with the aim of increasing awareness and reduce the demand of lorises in the trade.
