Critically Endangered Vulture Species in Northern Cameroon: Population Assessments and Community Engagement
Our findings from previous work revealed a drastic decline in vulture populations, particularly among Hooded Vultures (Necrosyrtes monachus). They are disappearing from some abattoirs in Cameroon where they were once abundant. Unfortunately, Hooded Vultures have received little research attention in Central Africa, and the lack of detailed information on their population size, roosting, and breeding habitats complicates conservation efforts. This project will address the alarming decline of the critically endangered Hooded Vultures (Necrosyrtes monachus) in Cameroon. Slaughterhouses represent vital habitats (feeding sites) for vultures in Cameroon, making their protection essential for conservation efforts. Therefore, the abattoirs will be the main sites of this project.
Through community engagement, we will reduce the killing and poisoning of vultures from the main abattoirs in the North region. We will organize vulture conservation education and awareness sessions around the region's slaughterhouses. These sessions will target managers and staff working in the slaughterhouses, as well as the surrounding communities. In addition to raising awareness, the project will involve GPS-tracking the movements of Hooded Vultures to identify other critical sites for their conservation, including roosting and breeding areas. This information will be instrumental in developing targeted conservation measures to protect these habitats. Although the study sites are not located within protected areas, they represent essential feeding points for Vultures, reinforcing the need for their conservation. Identifying roosting and breeding sites will be essential for developing effective conservation strategies. The findings from this project will enable us to protect these critical habitats, thereby enhancing conservation efforts for Hooded Vultures and contributing to broader initiatives. By addressing these issues, we strive to stop the ongoing pressures that contribute to the decline of these birds in Cameroon.
This project will primarily benefit the critically endangered Hooded Vulture (Necrosyrtes monachus). It will also support other endangered vulture species in Cameroon, including Rüppell's Vulture (Gyps rueppelli), White-backed Vulture (Gyps africanus), and Lappet-faced Vulture (Torgos tracheliotos). Local communities living near abattoirs will benefit from this project by reducing their exposure to poisoned meat targeting vultures. This project presents a good opportunity to preserve the remaining population of Hooded Vultures in specific slaughter areas by protecting these sites from poisoning and illegal killing. Through public awareness, education, tracking, and protection efforts, we aim to ensure a sustainable future for this critically endangered species in Cameroon.
