Non-Timber Forest Products (NTFP) Based Enterprises Development for Biodiversity Conservation (NEBC) in Jangjang Village of Sindhuli District of Nepal
The project aim is to resolve the issue of human encroachment on nature and conserve diversity of flora and fauna as well as crop diversity and increase agricultural productivity.
The project area (Jangjang Village of Sindhuli district) lies in the south-eastern part of Nepal. The village is at a distance of around 12 Kms. From the VDC headquarter and 67 Kms from the district head quarter with elevation ranging from 305 to 2787 metres, the Mahabharata hill range runs across the village. Endowed with tropical and evergreen forests the village is host to a variety of flora and fauna and holds some of the rear and endangered species. Besides being of a high aesthetic value, the dense forests of the village have been instrumental in maintaining environmental balance. Leopard, Tiger, Brown bear, Giant hornbill, Leopard cat, Musk deer, pangolin, Hispid hare, Impeyan pheasant, Lesser florican, Asiatic rock python, Golden monitor lizard share the forests as their common habitat. In spite of being endowed with biodiversity, the wildlife has come under constant extreme pressure owing to a number of factors.
The local communities have large family size and marginal land holdings. They work as agricultural labours, porters etc. The lack of education and awareness has had a direct bearing on the local environment and till date there have been no conservation efforts whatsoever. This is the habitants of the indigenous people i.e. Gharti, Magar and Damai, all the people are depend on the subsistence agriculture. Their agriculture is traditional, and they are not producing the crops, which may be profitable for them. Lacking such skill and awareness they are encroaching forest for their livelihood. Local people have no saving habit, and they spend on alcohol and other stuffs rather than their development. Due to over exploitation, the forest area has been degraded.
The above-mentioned problems are the main constraints for community livelihood and biodiversity conservation. To address such problems LIBC covers activities like Conservation of eco-system ,formation of FUG at VDC level, nursery operation, Increase Skill and awareness through training and extension activities, training on identification of important species, habitats and their conservation, training on nursery operation and seed treatment, training on income generation activities (bee keeping, extraction of essential oils, bamboo craftsmanship, ICS installation), training on identification and conservation of local best practices on farming, Publication of brochures on bio - diversity status of Janjang Village, protection of Water sources, river bank Protection, promote appropriate sustainable land use practices and institutional development for the sustainability of the project.
