Conservation of the Saker Falcon in the Ukrainian Steppes: Survey, Risk Assessment and Implementing Conservation Measures

The project aims to map the population of the globally endangered saker falcon (Falco cherrug), the factors threatening them and to offer conservation plan to secure and strengthen the population.

Based on the outcomes of the previous RSG project, this 2nd RSG project aims to strengthen saker falcon and steppe habitat conservation. Saker falcon is categorized as 'Endangered' by IUCN and the species has been ranked high in various annexes and appendixes of international agreements and legal frameworks (e.g. Convention on Migratory Species, CITES, Birds Directive of the European Union), as well as in national legislation (red lists). The major threats on the species are habitat loss, direct persecution, illegal taking and trapping for falconry, secondary poisoning from agricultural chemicals, etc.). The aim of the project is to compile data from West Ukraine and Moldova about the populations and all those factors threatening their survival.

We also aim to establish a dialogue between the key stakeholders and educate them to establish a viable and long-term conservation cooperation, which is unavoidable if we want to conserve the species on long-term in these agricultural areas. The project includes indirect conservation elements indispensable for the efficient conservation actions like surveying adults' habitat use, population monitoring and gathering threat-related information about the key migration routes. All those information gathered is needed for planning efficient conservation measures. Beside data collection and public awareness raising wok, direct conservation actions like nest guarding to prevent poaching, and installing artificial nests are also implemented in the project.
