Photo-Identification, Abundance and Distribution of Cetaceans in the Gulf of California: Providing Information Needed for Informed Management and Conservation I
Ecology and Conservation of Fin Whales (Balaenoptera physalus) in the Gulf of California
Provide essential scientific information of cetaceans in Bahia de los Angeles in order to understand their status, evidence their threats and emerge their conservation.
The Cetacean Observation Program PROCETUS aims to contribute to the conservation of cetaceans in Bahia de los Angeles through research and community involvement. With almost no research being done in the area, we want to have the ability to monitor populations on a regular basis.
Our purpose is to build a strong base line of the status of cetaceans in Bahia de los Angeles. The goal of the project is to gather abundance, distribution and anthropogenic impact information with photo-identification techniques through boat surveys. This information is necessary to understand the status and dynamics of the population of cetaceans, evidence its main threat and emerge its conservation.
Following marine mammal survey protocol, we aim to monitor the population of cetaceans present in BLA during the spring/summer time. The project aims to produce a unique cetacean database and a catalogue with the identification of individuals, identify individuals that show injuries caused by the interaction with the artisanal fisheries and identify high-risk zones of collisions with small boats. In addition, this survey effort will provide robust information on spatial and seasonal distribution of fin whales around the area.
The ultimate intended impact of the project is to generate scientific data on cetaceans of Bahia de los Angeles. The major outcome of the project would be to highlight the conservation status of cetaceans of BLA due to the lack of information on the matter.
