Cage fish farming is expanding in Lake Victoria Basin (LVB), with 76.1% of fish farmers reporting significant mortalities due to diseases. This project aims to assess the impact of these bacterial diseases on endangered haplochromine cichlids, which are critically endangered.
By identifying and characterizing pathogens affecting both farmed and wild cichlids, and developing measures to reduce disease transmission, the project seeks to protect these vulnerable species. It will also provide training on best disease management practices to fish farmers and stakeholders, enhancing conservation efforts and promoting a sustainable balance between aquaculture and biodiversity preservation.
