Capacity Enhancement for Better Wildlife Conservation and Monitoring in Kyrgyzstan
Scaling up Wildlife Monitoring and Protection in the Inner Tien-Shan Mountains of Kyrgyzstan
The Inner Tien-Shan Mountain landscapes are one of the key habitats for unique diversity of flora and fauna representing the entire region. Due to importance of animal husbandry to the economy of Kyrgyzstan, most such areas have also long been used for pastoralism. In this regards, the Inner Tien-Shan plays crucial role in local livelihoods and for wildlife conservation in general. The project will contribute to the study and conservation of the red list species, capacity enhancement of rangers for better wildlife monitoring and conservation in the Naryn State Nature Reserve.
Area of the Naryn State Nature Reserve is important component of the habitat of nationally endangered brown bears (Ursus arctos), globally vulnerable snow leopards (Panthera uncia), wolves and wild ungulate species such as argali, ibex, maral and roe deer. Within Kyrgyzstan, a habitat range of brown bears in many places overlap with a range of snow leopards.
The project will contribute to the “Seasonal migration route and food habits study in the Naryn State Nature Reserve” and ensure gathering basic data on habitat by using sensor cameras, implement educational and awareness creation activities among local population.
The project will also contribute to long-term snow leopard conservation and research work and focus on awareness creation about wild species through media and community involvement for wildlife conservation activities.
