Capacity Enhancement for Better Wildlife Conservation and Monitoring in Kyrgyzstan
The project is a logical continuation and scaling up of the 2nd Rufford Small Grant on “Habitat conservation of endangered species in the Inner Tien-Shan Mountains” (2019). Where the outcomes of previous project were used to develop much bigger project on "Snow leopard biology research and conservation in the Sarychat-Ertash Nature Reserve". The results of field surveys on local attitudes towards wildlife helped in better understanding of human-wildlife relation and conflict mitigation measures. As part of the capacity building, the rangers of the Naryn State Nature Reserve have been trained and can operate the sensor cameras themselves independently.
Therefore, the use of sensor cameras was successfully applied in their work and implement long-term wildlife monitoring activities. Based on collected materials it was possible to identify snow leopard (Panthera uncia) population and estimated brown bears presence within the reserve’s core zone. For better conservation of threatened species, the project will develop a Management Plan for the Naryn State Nature Reserve. Moreover, the project team is to extend the scope of the work to the Salkyn-Tör Nature Park which is also located in the Inner Tien-Shan region and provide the necessary guidance, training, and capacity building.
