Forest degradation has altered many world’s tropical forest landscapes. This degradation affects local communities who depend on forest resources i.e. medicines, vegetables for their wellbeing.

This project identified the wanton degradation that was taking place on the Akara Hills. Therefore, the project aims to rehabilitate the hills. Planting trees on Akara Hills will provide habitats for biodiversity by increasing woodland ecosystems. It will also change the climate of the area, trees act as carbon sinks. The project engages primary and secondary schools, and community based groups. We train them on environmental threats facing forests in Kenya, how this has and is going to affect them. We train them on tree nursery preparation and planting, and on alternative sources of fuel i.e. charcoal briquettes.

This is for following purposes; to inculcate the culture of tree planting among community members and change perceptions and behavior on wise-use of our natural resources. We encourage the schools to make good use of their grounds to green the school by planting trees which are important as shades for students to study, and as learning resources. The school going children being a young population, will be our future ambassadors on matters environment management and conservation. The Training on alternative sources of fuel energy and alternatively sources of livelihood like bee keeping are meant to help the community identify alternative sources of living, this will help avert forest degradation and provide income. The project will empower the community to play a role in decision-making on the management of the forests and other natural resources. Natural resources conservation and management has been in the hands of the state and state agencies, with the community living adjacent to these systems being positioned as resources users and not as populations who have a right over resources in their vicinity.
