This is the second year-round study to investigate the ecology and human impact on red uakari monkeys (Cacajao calvus ucayalii), a rare and relatively unknown Neotropical primate. During the past five years, we have habituated and collected preliminary data on a group of 200 red uakari in a study area along the Yavari River of the northeastern Peruvian Amazon. This group is being used to study the ecology, ranging patterns, behaviour and interspecific interactions during a two-year period.

The impact of hunting on red uakari monkeys is also being studied in areas with varying hunting pressure. Ecological information will be combined with the hunting studies to evaluate the current conservation status of red uakari monkeys in the Yavari valley and the potential for community based conservation initiatives that involve this rare species.
