Production of Information, Education, and Communication Materials towards Conservation of Local Biodiversity in Davao Oriental Philippines
The present project is the first extensive survey for Plecoptera in Compostela Valley Province, Mindanao and even in the Philippines. With only 25 species recorded in the country, we are aiming to increase this list, discover more new plecopteran species, and try to design (i.e. handout of Plecoptera fauna) and initiate activities leading to the preservation and protection of these important species.
In our effort to know more about this group of insect we tried to look for information concerning Plecoptera of the Philippines. Apparently, this is one of the poorest known groups in the Philippine archipelago particularly in Compostela Valley. Dr. Ignaz Sivec one of the leading experts of Plecoptera in the Oriental region informed us that Plecoptera in the Philippines is least known and willing to help us identify these useful insects. Only 25 species so far is known from the archipelago but none came near our study site. Hence, we proposed to conduct an extensive survey of Plecoptera in Compostela Valley Province to provide the first serious effort to document this group. All fluvial systems from each eleven municipalities will be visited within Academic Year 2013 and collection of Plecoptera fauna will be made using standard collection protocols. We are aiming that this endeavour will contribute greatly to the preservation and protection and increase the number of Plecoptera species in the Philippines. Much more, the research team is looking forward for the success of this project and our gratitude to Rufford Small Grant for providing us the funds.
