An environmental education program to enhance frog conservation awareness has been launched in 2002/2003 in Bogor (West Java, Indonesia). In 2003/2004 the program continued its activity by involving more schools to participate. It focused to high school students (grade 10 – 12) and their teachers. The goals of this program is to increase the awareness of frog conservation among the general public and school, to empower high school students with science and natural conservation activities in relation to frog studies, and to increase high school teacher knowledge on frog conservation issues. In total 563 schoolchildren from 13 schools from grade 3 – 11 has been involved in this project. Nineteen teachers had attended our workshop and more schools have expressed their interest to join the program.

We also organized on-site survey for older schoolchildren (grade10-11) so they can experience frog research, which involved 23 students from 8 high schools in Bogor. General outreach program was also conducted during 2004 through drawing competition. We believe that we need to build a strong networking to be able to develop research and conservation effort. To build a bridge between organizations and individuals interested with amphibian and reptile conservation we published a 6-monthly newsletter: Berita Sahabat Katak dan Reptil (The News of Friends of Frogs and Reptile) - later renamed as Warta Herpetofauna (Herpetofauna Newsletter). Inside the newsletter we published activities related to amphibian/reptile research, news related to amphibian/reptile conservation and list of paper/books related to the conservation of herpetofauna. The bulletin was distributed to various NGO through various mailing lists and also by mail. The third year program aims to continue the outreach program and also increasing networking and enhancing amphibian research in Java. Outreach program will extend not only in Bogor but also to adjacent areas (Jakarta). To enhance amphibian research we will develop a frog call record and frog research manual in Bahasa Indonesia and distribute it freely to herps enthusiast.
