Citizen Science for the Conservation of High Andean Amphibians with School Children - “Ciencia CiudaRANA”
Aims:
• Increase in 140 the number of informed and aware students that develop citizen science through the report of findings of Junin frogs.
• An educational institution implements and develops the research plan developed by the project so that they can carry out similar monitoring with their students and teachers, with the teams that will donate the project.
• 8 residents of a sector of a rural community will increase their knowledge regarding the responsible cleaning of canals and report findings of Junin frogs.
• Two Natural Resources Management Committees (Chinchaycocha Environmental Committee and Management Committee of the Junín National Reserve) are informed and updated about the current situation of Junin frogs
• More than 1000 people outside the scope of work are informed about the current situation of Junin frogs through the traveling interpretive panel and virtual infographics through social networks.
The Junín National Reserve is a Natural Protected Area in the central Peruvian Highlands, and is characterized by several endemic species, including Telmatobius macrostomus and Telmatobius brachydactylus. Both of these frogs are in danger of extinction (EN), in part because the ecosystems in which they live are impacted and there is a constant degradation of habitat from local human populations. We aim to develop a citizen science program focused on environmental education, including field outings with local students and adults. Our efforts will increase public knowledge on the unique nature of these frogs, and aid in their conservation.
