Sarlahi - where HEC is in its height, where over last decade alone 7 people have lost their lives in HEC, where few wild elephants have already been killed in retaliation (though there is no proof to verify this), where crop raiding and property damage by wild elephants are common events - it is must to immediately initiate a formal and organized HEC mitigation strategy to ensure the continuous and harmonious co-existence of local people and the endangered wild elephants. The proposed project will enable local people of Sarlahi to fight on-going HEC in much more organized and effective way.

During the project, local level HEC Mitigation Groups will be formed and made aware about the need of conservation, national level conservation related policies, existing directives for providing compensation/relief fund to the victims of Human Wildlife Conflict i.e., Directives for providing compensation/relief fund for the damages caused by wildlife 2009 and existing cost effective and practical HEC mitigation measures. Those groups, in turn, will make local people of their respective VDCs aware. In this way, the local people will get an opportunity to get more organized in terms of fighting on-going HEC and at the same time will be able to decide on adoption of cost effective and practical HEC mitigation measures. Further, they will also be able to do the necessary lobbying to secure the relief support from the Government of Nepal and other relevant organization. Awareness raising materials like hoarding board, flyers, posters including HEC related information assessed during the first phase will also be produced during the project period. The hoarding board will be placed in the HEC sensitive VDCs of Sarlahi to aware local people towards potential HEC incidents in Sarlahi.
