Through an ethnographic study, we will characterize the fishing population of Rio Formoso (Pernambuco-Brazil) and understand their perception of the anthropic impacts on the estuary's biodiversity. We also intend to hold workshops with fishers who carry out sightseeing tours with their own boats. Through them, we will seek to combine scientific knowledge with the experiences of the fishers themselves on ecological issues of estuarine ecosystems. With this, we intend to empower the population on the conservation of the estuary, contributing to make it protagonist in environmental awareness through ecological tourism.
The project will take place in an estuary in Pernambuco (Brazil) where a population of artisanal fishers depends on natural resources for their survival. However, the ecosystems are threatened by anthropic impacts.
We aim to understand how fishers perceive the disturbances to biodiversity and which are their strategies to solve them. For this, ethnographic surveys will be conducted to characterize the population and their perception of environmental impacts. In addition, we will undertake a community-involvement project in which fishers themselves will be the environmental awareness agents for tourists that use the estuarine ecosystems. We intend to hold workshops, where we will characterize the tourist activity exercised by fishers and discuss ecological issues to be addressed in their tours with tourists. Our goal is coming up with sustainable solutions to the disturbances perceived by fishers and place them as protagonists in nature conservation through ecological tourism.
