Promotion of Environmental Conservation through a Botanical Garden and Establishment of Environmental Clubs
This project aims to establish a Botanical Garden and Nature Trail at Karatina University, establish a tree nursery and initiate Nature Clubs in 10 selected primary schools.
This project aims to establish a Botanical Garden and Nature Trail at Karatina University for environmental education of the community, primary school children and university students. The facility will be used for the sensitization of community around the university on the importance of nature conservation for food security, climate change mitigation and sustainable livelihood. To introduce young children to environmental conservation, the project will establish or strengthen Nature Clubs in 10 selected primary schools in Nyeri County. These clubs will be trained on tree nursery establishment and planting of trees for environmental conservation. The objectives and the outcomes of the project are outlined as follows:
i) To carry out base-line survey on the biota of the land to be converted to Botanical Garden and Nature Trail. This activity will be undertaken to identify and document the biota of the area to be converted to Botanical Garden and Nature Trail. Outcome: Report on the biota.
ii) To establish Botanical Garden and Nature Trail at Karatina University. This facility will be used for continued sensitization of the neighbouring community on environmental conservation. In addition, the facility will not only be used as an outdoor laboratory for nature conservation students at the university but also for environmental education for primary school children. Outcome: Nature Trail and Botanical Garden.
iii) To establish Nature Clubs in selected 10 primary schools. These will be established to ensure the young pupils are introduced to issues of nature conservation early in life. Outcome: Nature clubs established in primary schools for environmental conservation by future generations.
iv) To establish a demonstration tree nursery in the Botanical Garden. A tree nursery for indigenous trees will be established as a source of seedlings to be used in the in the Botanical Garden Outcome: Established tree nursery for the process of reforestation. The seedlings will be distributed to members of the community for planting to mitigate against the effects of climate change.
