Koshi Tappu Wildlife Reserve lies on the floodplains of the Sapta Koshi River in the south-eastern Terai. The reserve was gazetted in 1976 to preserve habitat for the only remaining population of Water buffalo, Arna (Bubalus arnee). In 1987, Koshi Tappu was declared a Ramsar site, a wetland of international significance. The reserve has important habitat for a variety of wildlife. The last surviving population of Wild buffalo is found here. The estimated population of around 160 individuals is dwindling. They are distinguished from domestic buffalo by their much bigger horns.

Conservation program will be a wheel less cart without awareness program. Awareness of people is an essential key matter to make the conservation program successful. Local buffaloes enter the reserve in Koshi Tappu wildlife reserve where they breed with wild water buffalo has threats the conservation of gene pool of water buffalo so creation of community awareness on gene pool conservation among the indigenous local people are another important aspects for Water Buffalo conservation. Creation of online network groups, leaflets preparation, hoarding board preparation and installation, preparation of Nepalese calendar and recommend the better mechanism for long term survive of Water buffalo are the key outputs of the project. Research and Extension Group, Acting for Resource Development (REGARD) has become a main responsibility organization to succeed the targeted objectives on Water buffalo conservation. We will use the local people, our NGO staffs and national resources persons to accomplish the aspiration goals.
