This project was based on a survey from August 2003 to December 2004, of which only two gibbon groups were confirmed in southern Yunnan. Xilong Mountain, part of Fenshuiling National Nature Reserve, was one of the three potential localities of the western black crested gibbon (Nomascus concolor). However, no direct information was obtained because of limited duration and staff deficiency in previous survey. Gibbons in Xilong Mountain were suffering anthropogenic threats although the forest was close to the Vietnamese border and far away from human settlements.

This project will confirm the population and distribution of the western black crested gibbon in Xilong Mountain, and make assessment of their conservation status. Available information will be provided for NGOs, researchers and decision makers. A series of actions to improve gibbon conservation awareness of local people will be taken in surrounding communities. Finally, a plan leading to cross-border gibbon conservation in China and Vietnam will be made based on this survey.
