Over exploitation of marine fisheries resulted in stock depletion and species extinction. The threatened status of Benin marine fishes such as Pristis pristis, Sardinella maderensis, Pseudupeneus prayensis, Balistes capriscus, Pseudotolithus senegallus, Pseudotolithus senegalensis, Epinephelus itajara, Epinephelus marginatus and Balistes punctatus is likely to aggravate without research and conservation actions, especially since local communities are unaware of the current stock and threatened status.

This project will document the stock health of targeted species, assess and document threats and attitudes toward conservation; use environmental education to support these species’ sustainability, and promote alternative sources of protein to Sardinella as fishmeal in sustainable aquaculture.
