The project aim is to ensure the long participative conservation of Sumatran tiger and its habitat in Batang Gadis National Park communities, North Sumatra Province,Indonesia. The illegal logging and some encroachments in Batang Gadis National Park areas are increasing, this is main problem of Sumatran tiger habitat conservation. The training that to be importantly undertaken are tiger conservation cadre training and then good environmental governance training. The both trainings are aimed to that sharpen local teacher capacity in tiger conservation knowledge and Village heads capacity in sustainable development leadership.
The Batang Gadis National Park is located in Mandailing Natal District. This area is welknown since mid XIX century for its famous Mandailing Coffee. Furthermore, The National Park covers 108.000 hectares and it is located between 00°30'00" north latitude and 99°13'00" east longitude and 01°02'00" north latitude and 99°50'00" east longitude, the highest peak of the area is active volcano Sorik Marapi, 2.146 meters in the center of Mandailing valley.
Base on CII research (2004), this area have 218 kinds of birds, small and big mammalians, reptiles and amphibia. The National Park is considered as one of the hot spot critical ecosystem in the world, contains some of very important highly biodiversity area. Some of important flora and fauna can be found such as, Tapir, Honey bear, Sumatran elephant, Sumatran tiger, Sumatran Orangutan, Hornbill, Rhinocerous, Leopard, Golden cat, Thomas leaf monkey, diverse snakes, certain kinds of frogs, fish and more than 20 species of birds. The Wildlife Conservation Society,2009 was reported that total population density of Sumatran tiger in Batang Gadis National Park estimation is 1,8 per 100 km2 and have 29-103 tiger for the whole area.
The Capacity building for local peoples is very important part of nature conservation missions, especially in park management as a natural Sumatran tiger habitat, like we know that this critical endangered species is need a long term existing of their habitat (home) for population. The local peoples who have a good understanding about natural forest and it biodiversity conservation will have a good scheme for their conservation fighting in National Park. The ironic case, The Batang Gadis National Park is a Sumatran tiger (Phantera tigris sumatrae) habitat that was losing about 28,000 hectare of their area because the result of Supreme Court decision which was made the Mining Company become the winner of the court decision on 2010.
Finally, this project is functionally as quick response effort to make more peoples agree, aware and have same perception that National Park as natural habitat of tiger must be protected in long term duration from degradation activities threats. The project starting is makes some training curriculum that needed by beneficiary, and then each training will be conducted in Mandailing Natal District. The final goal is expected to give more human resources can make collaboration for Sumatran tiger & landscape protection, importantly a clear understanding about Strategy & Action Plan of Sumatran Tiger conservation 2007 – 2017 in Indonesia.
