Population Density, Distribution and Conservation Status of Marine Otter (Lontra felina, Molina 1782) in the Great Island of Chiloé, and Channels and Fiords of the Southern Coast of Chile
Population Density, Distribution and Conservation Status of Marine Otter (Lontra felina) in the Archipielago de las Guaitecas and Corcovado Gulf
The main objective of this project is to obtain information about Chungungo and Huillín populations in islands and channels, in order to estimate the current conservation status s and to propose effective conservation measures.
The Chungungo (Lontra feline) and Huillìn (Lontra provocax) are Endangered species that live in marine coastal ecosystem in southern Chile. Most important threats of these species are habitat destruction and illegal hunting. Currently the available information about of L. felina has been increasing mainly in southern Chile. However in L. provocax is low yet.
This research, which involves an easy and effective methodical study, will contribute to the knowledge base of otters by means of analysing their population density and distribution in unexplored areas of southern Chile. This information are supporting scientists and government agencies to determine the real status of otter, so relevant conservation areas.
