Fishing is one of the key livelihood activities of people in Marshall City.

The mangroves and the estuaries are breeding grounds for most marine life, hence the conservation of the areas will provide continuous mean of reproduction of marine life which otherwise could suffer reduction in their population as Liberia is a country which is heavily dependent on wild meat including fish and other marine life as principal source of protein. Building the capacity of community dwellers will shift their activities from gathering to production oriented initiatives which will ultimately reduce the degradation of the biodiversity of the mangrove forest.

The community dwellers along with their leadership structures will be involved in all aspect of the project – from planning, through formal and informal discussions to explain the idea of the project; implementation by their participation in the Mangrove Action Groups and schools will increase ownership and commitment for the project; and monitor and evaluation.

Activities of the project:

- The activities of the project is to organize seven focus group discussions in five major coastal communities with the local people including youths, women, men and traditional leaders to create profound awareness of the importance of the conservation of the biodiversity of the mangrove ecosystem.

- Establish two Nature clubs in the (2) community schools and facilitate the setting up of one Mangrove Action Group and train them as a community –based organization who will highlight environmental protection through mangrove forest conservation and the rational use of natural resources in the mangrove ecosystem in the communities; and

- Ensure that the awareness and training programs are of permanent benefit to the locals by conducting periodic monitoring of the harvesting process of the resources in the mangrove ecosystem and then offering of appropriate advice to the community dwellers.
